Create Your Own Blog

Create a blog of your own at blogger.com (you must use blogger). Please include your name somewhere on your blog. Watch this video on blogs on youtube.

ASSESSMENT: To receive credit for this assignment you must email me (R-Adler@neiu.edu) the link to your new blog.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Below are step by step instructions on creating a blog using blogger.com.

1. Go to www.blogger.com
2. If you do not have a gmail/google account you will need to create one.
3. If you have one, sign in with it.
4. Click on the button on the left-hand side of the page that says "New Blog"
5. Enter a title, the url you would like your blog to have, and choose a template.
(I have created my own blog for this class using blogger and called it adlerstechthoughts.blogspot.com) You can call yours whatever you want.
6. Your blog has been created. Click on it. You can modify it. Click on the layout link on the left-hand side of the page if you want to change the layout, etc. You can click on posts to create a new post (enter the title and message and click publish at the top).
7. To view your blog click on the view blog link on the top of the page (or enter your url).
8. View your profile and edit it.
9. Include your name somewhere on the page so I know who you are.
10. The URL for your blog is the name you called it followed by .blogspot.com
11. Make the blog your own - have fun with it!
12. Remember to email me the full URL of your blog.

Your First Blog Post

Introduce yourself and answer the following question:

How do you feel a course can effectively integrate blogs, Twitter, and/or other Web 2.0 technologies? Cite one reading.

Create a Blogroll

In order to have the most uptodate class list - wait until after January 31 to complete this assignment.
You will add a "Blogroll," or Blog List, to your Blog. Here you will link to all your classmates' (and instructor's) blogs.

Here's how to set up your blogroll on blogger:

1. Once you have logged in to your blog, go to "Layout"
2. Select Add a Gadget (You can move it wherever you want on the page later)
3. Select Blog List
4. ADD your classmates' blogs (one ad a time) to your Blog List by clicking on "Add a blog to your list." You can find the URLs of your classmates' blogs by looking at my blogroll here:
   http://adlerstechthoughts.blogspot.com/
5. Add my blog as well (adlerstechthoughts.blogspot.com/) in your blogroll. 
6. You now have a "Blogroll" 

Networks and Communication

1. Create a blog post with the above title.
2. Discuss different ways that asychronous (Email, text messaging, etc) and synchronous (Skype, IM, etc) communication can be used.
3. Cite at least one of the assigned readings.

Reply to two of your classmates' Blog Posts!

1. Comment on 2 of your classmates' blog posts by clicking on the comment link on the bottom of their post.
2. You will need to put in 2 random sequence of letters before your comment gets posted.  Don't skip this step!
3. You can subscribe by email if you wish to get notified of any follow-ups to that thread.

Comment on your classmates' blog posts

1. Double-check that your blogroll is up to date (a few students were added a little later).
2. Blog comments will be graded at the end of the semester.
3. You are expected to comment on your classmates' blog posts. You should have an average of 2 blog comments per week. If sometimes you have 1 and sometimes 3, that's fine. It is also fine to miss one week of comments but then have extra comments the following week. The average should be 2 per week. However, it is not acceptable to do all blog comments at the end of the semester. You need to stay on top of it and although it will be graded at the end, I will look at the dates you submitted them. So keep commenting.

1. Create a blog post with the above title
2. Discuss the problem of privacy and the Internet
3. Please cite from at least one of the assigned readings.
4. Reminder: Comments on blogs graded at the end of the semester.
